Auditions

When we conducted  auditions for The Shadows of Edgar Allan Poe. The auditions were an exploration of creative approaches to the text and the imaginings of the potential cast. Unlike normal auditions the cast was encouraged to play with one of Poe's pieces. Here's what we did:

Improvisation Riff Ideas for Shadows of Poe

Using Annabel Lee:

  • Work with your group to explore one of the following:

  • A favorite line--play with it, its sound, repeating, or find a way to turn it into movement.

  • A favorite character Annabel or Poe act or tell their story either in words or movement

  • The words and sounds, what is the audio landscape in the poem how can the environments suggested be used to paint a picture

  • Your own ideas based upon the piece. Thoughts impressions can you relate to us through language, movement or song

  • Is there music you hear, are there rhythms? Are their voices and melodies? Explore these with the words or favorite words.

  • Or combine any of the above and above all, have fun there are no mistakes only a great time to experiment.
